The California Code of Regulations (CCR, Title 17, Section 2952) provides that the following students receive hearing screening:
- Students on school entry and every third year thereafter through grade 8. For example, hearing screening can be done in kindergarten or first grade and then in grades two, five, eight, upon a new enrollment and when referred from other grade levels.
- Students upon first entry into the California school system
- Within one year of students getting initial educational testing
- All students being assessed for three-year reviews for special education services
The law also provides that a parent/guardian can have their child excused from screenings upon submission of a written request to their child's school administrator.
