The Ligenda School Hearing Screening Program meets all legal requirements. It is designed to screen a large number of students and identify children with possible hearing difficulties at the earliest possible stage. This allows time for the child to get a diagnosis and treatment with as little interference to their learning as possible.
Your screening will include the following:
- A two part screening. The first screening, the Sweep Screen, occurs for all students and is a quick appraisal of students hearing. The second screening occurs 2-4 weeks after the first and is only for those students who do not pass the first screening. Generally, by waiting 2-4 weeks for the second screen, temporary health problems (common cold, ear infections) will have resolved and those students impacted will pass this stage of the screening.
- Threshold Testing is conducted for all students who do not pass the Sweep Screening. This involves measuring a student's hearing at specific frequencies by decreasing intensity of tones. No further evaluation is necessary for those students who pass Threshold Testing. Those students who do not pass this stage of the screening are referred for further evaluation
- The preparation of Individualized Student Screening Reports for every student screened
- Screening Summary for site
- Education Materials and Instructions for site
- Referral Letters for students who do not pass the Threshold Testing of the two part screening
Referrals: Approximately 5% of students screened get referred at this stage. Further evaluation is essential at this point in order to get further information regarding the child’s hearing. Some children may be in need of medical treatment which may result in restoration of hearing and the prevention of permanent hearing impairment.
