One rarely considers what it is like to be hearing impaired and how it affects a child's ability to succeed in school. One of the most serious repercussions of hearing loss is the breakdown of communication, an essential part of human behavior.
The impact of hearing loss on a child is tremendous, and may negatively impact his/her life. A child with hearing loss may develop:
- Difficulty with normal speech and language development
- Difficulty with behavior and social growth, which may lead to disciplinary problems at school
- Difficulty learning, which often interferes with school success
- Increasing isolation in a hearing world
- Students in grade K or 1 and every third year thereafter through grade 8
- Students upon first entry into the California school system
- All students being assessed for initial and three-year reviews for special education services
Referrals from other grade levels are encouraged. Your teachers can be an excellent source of information for referrals. Please review the guidelines for behavior of children at risk for more information.
