A child's classroom behavior may indicate the possibility of hearing loss. Your teachers will be an excellent source of information about students who may need to be tested. We highly recommend that students exhibiting the following behavioral patterns be referred for hearing screening:
- Staff members consistently need to raise their voice in order to get the student’s attention
- Students who frequently say “huh?” or often ask for things to be repeated
- Students who answer a question with an unrelated answer
- Students who respond inconsistently to sound, sometimes they hear it, sometimes not
- Students who watch the speaker's face carefully or frequently turn their head so one ear is facing the direction of the speaker
- Students who speak in a very soft or loud voice
- Students who prefer certain sounds either loud or soft
- Students who sometimes do not come or turn towards the speaker when called
- Students who frequently complain of their ears hurting
- Students who appear inattentive and/or their school achievement may be low
- Students who have behavioral or discipline difficulties
