Scoliosis may be difficult to detect under the layered and loose clothing that is common in adolescents. In particular, a student who is worried about how they look or suspects that something is unusual with their back may make extra efforts to cover themselves, making casual detection impossible.
A child with scoliosis may appear to have the following:
- One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
- One hip higher than the other
